Changing self limiting beliefs

Today I am going to tippy toe through the emotional mine field of a most contentious subject… that of belief.

It can be a controversial subject for obvious reasons yet I would respectfully ask that you suspend judgement (or at least set aside your own beliefs…) and read with an open and engaging mind. My purpose in exploring this subject is to help gently nudge you toward liberation from something known as ‘self limiting belief’ i.e. the thing that impedes progress toward fulfilment and success.

But firstly perhaps we should ask what beliefs are, or more to the point what they are not. It’s a question I often pose to my clients who sometimes struggle to provide an obvious or coherent answer. Read more

Countless people start off with the best intentions of quitting smoking, and yet so many find it difficult to kick their habit or abstain for more than just a few weeks or months. Why is this?

As a therapist, I find that one of the primary mistakes people make is that they focus on what they don’t want, rather than what they do want. It might sound obvious, but to be really successful with any form of personal change, you need to want the change in the first place.

Authentic change generally occurs when the discomfort of where you are ‘now’ is greater than the discomfort of making the change to where you want to be. Read more

In today’s cut-throat corporate world, hundreds of millions of dollars and euro are spent in earnest each year as businesses attempt to cement their brands into the collective psyche of consumer awareness.

Marketers, entrepreneurs and business gurus regularly invest funds approaching the GDP of a small country in an attempt to promote the next ‘essential’ must have yoke (for readers unfamiliar with Irish colloquialisms replace yoke with gizmo). Across the globe the creativity of today’s business executives are tested and stretched to the full resulting in household names such as Reebok, Ebay, Google and Kodak.

Vast fortunes are spent on market research as the branders seek to create the next ‘tip of the tongue’ name that sticks to the mind like Velcro (there’s another one…)

It seems that a good brand name is at the core of business success. Read more

“With our thoughts we create our world” wrote the Buddha…

Perhaps never a truer word has been spoken. The conscious thinking mind is in many ways a curse and a blessing in equal measure. It enables us to visualise a future, perform extraordinary feats of mental agility, build vehicles that can take man to distant planets, design perplexing architectural structures, develop technologies that are the stuff of science fiction, and so much more.

Yet this ability to visualise and imagine a future outcome can also fill us with a myriad of irrational fears and unhelpful thoughts that limit our real potential. Read more

12 simple steps for managing stress

Step 1: Exercise (the number ONE stress reliever)

As a result of stress, a hormone called adrenaline is released in the body. People suffering with stress are often over adrenalised. Exercise helps to burn it off and reduce it. Exercise also triggers the production of a ‘happy’ chemical called endorphin in the brain. Endorphins help elevate mood, make you feel happier and more relaxed. So if you feel stressed, take a brisk walk for 30 minutes. Better still, make regular daily exercise a part of your everyday routine. You WILL feel the benefits. Read more

12 tips to help you improve your sleep

1, Get some daily exercise, even a little.

A small amount of exercise during the day will help you to relax in the evening. Your ancestors would have been far more physically active using all of their muscle groups throughout the day. 21st century life is a more sedentary affair, so adding a daily exercise routine will aid sleep. Exercising will help you benefit from the release of a group of ‘feel good’ hormones called endorphins. They help lift your mood and also to unwind. However, avoid exercising within 2 hours of going to bed. Read more

Inspiration for a Happier Life!

Happiness… what is it and where can I find it?

Firstly, realise that happiness as a concept is different for everybody and as such cannot be encapsulated into a single descriptive idea. However there are specific foundation stones or ‘universal truths’ that have been identified as necessary in order to experience frequent moments of authentic happiness.

Ultimately of course, happiness is subjective, but I’ll stick my neck out and state that real and enduring happiness can only be found within us and not in
materialism or external things. Read more
